RESS RELEASE National Salvation Front Washington DC Office

Washington, DC - May/09/2008 -
The vicious manner of Hezbollah-led militiamen that have taken over Beirut yesterday and today threatens the peace and security of Lebanon. It will also result in grave consequences to the stability and security of the whole Middle East region.

Syria and Iran are the real motivators and financers of such chaos led by Hezbollah and militias in Lebanon. The government of Bashar Assad might have given Hassan Nasrallah the green light in launching his armed attack on the legitimacy of the Lebanese state and its nationally elected government. Their demands of the resignation of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora are a prelude to turning around the democratic process, which was supported by the majority of the Lebanese people along with international community.

Democracy in Lebanon is in danger of being flattened by the forces of fundamentalism and terrorism. The U.S. must stand firm on the principles of sovereignty and freedom which form the cornerstone of peace and stability in the region. America's national interests are being threatened once more by rogue armed militia which aims to thwart the vision and the future of the Middle-East, free of absolutism and fanaticism.

The Syrian National Salvation Front calls on the U.S. to take decisive actions, beginning with censure and condemnation of Hezbollah actions and its supporters Syria and Iran. We stand behind the latest actions by the U.S. administration in extending the sanctions against the Syrian regime for another year. We support the March 14 forces led by the Siniora government. The international community should support the Lebanese army to assume its national responsibility in keeping the peace and security of a sovereign Lebanon for all its citizens.

The National Salvation Front condemns the actions of Hezbollah in undermining Lebanon's democratically elected government. We call on the international community to send a strong message to Syria and Iran to cease their interference in Lebanon and comply with UN Security Council resolutions 1559 and 1701.

The forces of moderation are at risk in Lebanon. We therefore ask the American Administration and Congress to protect the independence and sovereignty of Lebanon and to help the people of Syria and Lebanon in their struggle for freedom and democracy.
